Tokyo begins 2022 with new exhibitions such as the one that presents traditional Japanese performing arts at the Tokyo National Museum or the one that shows the works of the popular Japanese author Hokusai.
In addition, the capital hosts “hybrid tours”, a new modality to experience the traditional district of Asakusa in person and online.
The Tokyo Hyokeikan National Museum has organized a special exhibition showcasing the traditional Japanese performing arts of Kabuki, Bunraku, Noh and Kyogen, Gagaku and Kumi-odori, all of which are registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Japan. Titled “The World of Traditional Performing Arts,” the show features clothing, musical instruments, and accessories that have been used on stage, where the unique beauty of each performing art can be seen.
Originally, the exhibition was scheduled for the spring 2020, but it was canceled due to the pandemic. It opened its doors on January 7 and will show additional content and pieces to the public until March 13.
More Hokusai
Once again this year, the popular Sumida Hokusai Museum presents a special exhibition of Hokusai’s works under the title “Hokusai Historiography: Japan Through the Ages -How Was It Represented?-“. The exhibition features a collection of paintings and prints by Katsushika Hokusai and his disciples on heroes, heroines, and events in Japanese history such as Shikibu Murasaki and Takeda Shingen.
Located in Sumida, northeast of Tokyo, the Sumida Hokusai Museum is situated in the neighborhood where Hokusai Katsushika spent most of his life and is a space dedicated to presenting his life and works. Without a doubt, the museum is a must-see for fans of Hokusai in Tokyo.
Asakusa “on tour”
Jidaiya, one of the leading rickshaw or pedicab operators in Asakusa, has launched “Hybrid Tour”, a new combination of in-person and online tours. Together with those who participate in the face-to-face tour to get to know the traditional corners of Asakusa, others who connect remotely through a screen join together, and everyone enjoys the tour together. Jidaiya uses the knowledge gained from previous in-person tours to offer online versions showcasing popular traditional Japanese culture, such as the tea ceremony, Japanese dance, and iaido, the Japanese martial art of sheathing and unsheathing the katana.
