During the last week we were invited to tour an event as wonderful as it is recommendable: the Helsinki Biennial 2023.

We were privileged witnesses of the great amount of works that can be contemplated either in the center of the city, where you can visit incredible museums and sculptures in the open air, or in the populated nature island of Vallissari, where other exhibitions of the Biennial can be visited.

Helsinki Biennial 2023: New Directions May Emerge unites 29 artists and collectives from around the world, aiming to explore alternative perspectives on living in and comprehending the world.

Curated by Joasia Krysa, along with five additional curatorial collaborators, the second edition delves into urgent contemporary issues such as environmental degradation, political conflicts, and the influence of technology.

The Helsinki Biennal 2023 it is open until September 17, 2023, presenting a diverse range of approximately 50% newly commissioned artworks and site-specific installations, encompassing sculpture, film, performance, and immersive installations.

Continuing the responsible approach established in its first edition, the biennial actively promotes collaboration with sustainability agency Positive Impact to develop a new sustainability program that extends beyond the biennial itself, encompassing the broader HAM Helsinki Art Museum.

Additionally, the organizing team of the Helsinki Biennal 2023 has maintained close partnerships with organizations and experts to ensure informed decision-making for the hosting of its second edition. Once again, each artwork’s concept and placement have been thoughtfully evaluated in consultation with Metsähallitus (Parks and Wildlife Finland) and the Finnish Heritage Agency, prioritizing the conservation of both natural surroundings and historical buildings.
